When the GOP Says They Want to ‘Strengthen’ Social Security.
Oh, and corporate Democrats, too.
We’ve heard a lot of talk about the debt ceiling lately, haven’t we? The media has been widely reporting a presumed “stand off” between the Democrats and Republicans over the issue as well, which is an idea not even worth entertaining considering there’s absolutely no way either party lets the nation default on its debt. That being said, it only makes the reports of Republicans attempting to use this as an opportunity to gut Social Security and Medicare is telling to say the least for a number of reasons, not least of which is the fact that there are a number of Democrats like Joe Manchin wanting to meet them “halfway”.
They’re all the same aren’t they, these lawmakers?
Lets talk about what they really mean when they talk about “strengthening” social security, or meeting “halfway”.
Wha Republicans want to do — and Democrats like Joe Manchin want to let them get away with — is be able to have it both ways. They want to strike the fear of God into their base and insist that Social Security will become insolvent if urgent, necessary changes aren’t made. But these changes that they vow will “strengthen” this beloved, fundamentally necessary program amount to nothing more than robbery.
