It feels like something is about to happen.

I was finally able to watch Joe Biden’s speech from Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, where he addressed the threat posed to American democracy by “MAGA Republicans” and their leader Donald Trump.

Immediate impressions? Well, I can’t help thinking that if he really wanted to avoid any deep state talk coming from the right wing, he probably could have picked a less ominous looking backdrop. I understand the intent of course. It was meant to convey seriousness, and likely a sense of foreboding that would grab the attention of those watching. I suppose that was mission accomplished?

All that being said of course, the substance of the speech, the tone taken, and the context of what’s currently going on as it’s taking place in particular was what really grabbed my attention. He stressed that what’s going on today is “not normal”, and highlighted the extremism that Trump and his followers represent. He even went so far as to say it “threatens the very foundations of our republic”. Biden also expressed that it was his duty to “level with” the American people, and said what he believes to be true is the MAGA Republicans do not respect the constitution, believe in the rule of law, or respect the will of the American people.
