Trump Won That Debate, and He Wasn’t Even There.

Why the former President had the best night out of all the candidates.

About twenty minutes in, I decided I might as well force myself to watch the first Republican debate of the 2024 election. A debate that was of course missing the most important figure in the GOP who also happens to be leading the rest of the field by 30 points. It was difficult to expect much out of the debate, but I like I’m sure many others were, was curious to see how the rest of the candidates performed. Who, if anybody, would rise to the occasion?

Well, the debate went about as you would expect.

As if we needed further reminders of the fact that the GOP is reliant on buzz words, last night was certainly an example. It was as difficult to follow at times as you would imagine, going from talking about small towns and sick farmers and a dying America, to a strong, freedom loving America urban city crime, fentanyl and the border in the span of about 3 minutes. Mike Pence sounded like he was running in the 80s, DeSantis sounded like he was yelling angrily at no one in particular in an effort to sound tough and assertive, and Chris Christie came in with the typical one liners that drew applause. Businessman Vivek Ramaswany was the only one even close to having Trump’s energy on the stage…
