“So would you rather have Republicans in charge?”
It’s time to debunk this talking point.
It’s not surprising that democratic lawmakers and pundits don’t exactly like critiques from the left. Of course, neither do loyal democratic liberal voters. In the years now that I have dedicated to writing about politics here in the United States, I have noticed that there are a few reliable lines of response to people who expect better from the Democrats. Lately, with Democrats in control of the white house, the senate, and the house of representatives, one of the most common lines nearly always boils down to: “so would you rather have Republicans in charge?”
No. No, I would not.
I critique the Democratic party because if they don’t deliver on their campaign promises, Republicans are going to retake power.
At this point, I mean it’s already basically a given.
Remember when Joe Biden ran on a public healthcare option? Has he even brought that up since the campaign? Remember when Joe Biden promised to cancel $10,000 in student loan debt? Remember when Democrats promised higher wages? Remember when they promised voting rights legislation? Remember when they promised to make the child tax credit permanent?
