Even as mundane and uncontroversial as the American left overall might be in the context of the rest of the world, we still tend to be called radical. Reflecting on the 2020 election it’s almost surreal to consider the way those of us who supported Bernie Sanders were treated, whether it be by loyal liberal voters we might encounter on social media, or by mainstream media pundits like Chuck Todd or Chris Matthews. Who can forget Chuck Todd comparing Bernie’s supporters to Nazi brown shirts, and Chris Matthews comparing Bernie’s historic Nevada primary win to the fall of France to Nazi Germany in WW2? Meanwhile, all we’ve really asked for is healthcare, the dignity of a living wage, and a planet that will be able to support our children and grandchildren.

With all the ups and downs along the way, there’s no denying that there is a growing sense of frustration and desperation among young leftists in particular, but why wouldn’t there be? We get compared to Nazis for demanding accountability from our politicians on issues as serious as the climate crisis. Meanwhile, as we experience yet another summer with record setting temperatures, lawmakers like Wisconsin’s Senator Ron Johnson call climate change “bullsh*t”.
