Schumer’s Debt Ceiling Standoff With the GOP is a Waste of Time.
Why bother with the GOP when he doesn’t have to?
In a move that should come as no surprise, Kentucky Senator and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed that not a single Senate Republican will vote to raise the debt ceiling. Of course, they cited being unwilling to enable Democrats’ reckless spending and the reconciliation package as their reasoning, conveniently leaving out the fact that raising a debt ceiling has nothing to do with additional spending but instead paying back debts already accrued. Debts — it’s worth noting — that were accrued under the Trump administration. Now, in what he probably thinks is a show of force, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has decided that he will force a vote on raising the debt ceiling anyways.
But, why?
As McConnell himself pointed out when this entire debacle started, Democrats would be well within their rights to raise the debt ceiling through reconciliation, not needing a single GOP vote. Personally, I understand the thought process behind the optics of forcing them to vote against it, but does it really matter that much? Is it really going to add to their advertisements that much during the midterms? Don’t they have enough material about this issue alone without forcing the vote? The thing is, the vote…
