Ron DeSantis is Not Just Florida’s Problem.

We should all be concerned about what the Governor represents.

It should come as no surprise that Donald Trump unequivocally remains the Godfather of the Republican party. He remains beloved by the base, still wields control of the lawmakers and dictates their approach through threats of primary challengers, and is the favorite for the 2024 Republican primary by a large margin. A margin so large, in fact, I would argue should he run the nomination is all but guaranteed to be his. But with all the focus still on the former President and his hold on the GOP, another prominent figure on the right seems to have positioned himself quite well to inherit Donald Trump’s throne: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Considering how he will inevitably be running for President in 2024, we should probably stop viewing DeSantis as just Florida’s problem.

Just at the end of June, after banning the teaching of critical race theory, DeSantis signed a bill mandating that public schools and universities assess “viewpoint diversity” through a survey developed by his State Board of Education. DeSantis also hinted at the possibility of budget cuts for schools that his ultra-conservative administration does not feel meet their standards. As the Florida Education Association pointed out, students already have free speech on campus…
