…Why?

Well, it’s happening.

After an agreement to it a while back, Florida Governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis and none other than California Governor Gavin Newsom are officially going to debate.

Dominick Mastrangelo with The Hill writes:

“Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) have agreed to participate in a televised debate in November that will be moderated by Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The debate, which will air on Fox during Hannity’s 9 p.m. prime-time program, will take place Nov. 30, the network announced.

The event will run 90 minutes and take place at location that has still yet to be determined but will be in Georgia…”

With a date officially set, it seems we should note why this is even happening.

Gavin Newsom wants to be the Biden alternative, and it’s really just that simple. Newsom and the people in his corner are many things, but unintelligent is not one of them. They know that an other grueling campaign for an 80 year old president is a lot to ask, and of course they’re all too aware of the fact that the American people simply do not want the Trump vs. Biden matchup. They know that Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg have not done nearly enough to assert themselves as the heir apparent, and Newsom is bound and determined to get a step ahead of the game. Whether in 2024 if Biden comes to the decision not to run again or in 2028, Newsom will be running for President.

As for Ron DeSantis, the man is just desperate to stay in the conversation. He just wants more opportunities to get in front of the cameras and reassert himself as an actual alternative to Donald Trump. He wants the chance to talk down to a liberal and curry favor with a base that does not seem to even consider him relevant anymore. He knows he doesn’t stand a shot right now, and I’m sure he views Gavin Newsom as a hopeful heir apparent to Joe Biden as well. It feels like a move for the future for Ron DeSantis as it is for Gavin Newsom.

As unappealing as the idea of a Biden and Trump rematch sounds, there’s no denying that the idea of a Ron DeSantis vs. Gavin Newsom doesn’t sound much better. It’s not as though either of them really have anything to offer. That being said, I’m probably going to be watching the debate. The part of me that loves the theatrical part of politics is going to enjoy watching them attempt to outdo each other, or even just try and show they have a genuine bone in their body. Of course, I can’t help hoping this debate will ensure neither of them ever have a future at the federal level.
