Remember When Biden Promised to Waive Vaccine Patents as President?
Video has surfaced of the President making a clear and necessary promise he still has yet to keep.
With Covid cases continue to surge around the world and India setting a record number of cases seemingly every single day, the Biden administration has been facing mounting pressure to use its authority to waive vaccine patents as the majority of the Democrats in the House call on him to do so, and for obvious reasons. Apparently, his advisors are split, with some arguing he has a moral imperitive to act and others incredibly making the argument that they shouldn’t do it because they don’t know for certain if it will affect the global supply.
My guess is, as is so often the case, there are lobbyists with the pharmaceutical companies fomenting this talking point.
Unfortunately for the group urging him not to do the moral and ethical thing, video of the President on the campaign trail promising that he would waive vaccine patents has gone viral online. In it, when asked if he would waive them he says unequivocally:
“Absolutely, this is the only humane thing in the world to do.”
“…The only humane thing in the world to do…”
As much as he and some of his advisors might currently be wishing he had never said this, the President is absolutely correct.
Incredible, isn’t it, how politicians seem to lose all sense of moral integrity when they’re off the campaign trail and in power?
Even if waiving the patents didn’t solve all of the problems with vaccine supply, are we really going to pretend that it wouldn’t significantly help, especially coupled with sending supplies as the administration has already done?
As I have said before, the President ran on a platform that consisted of little more than being an empathetic alternative. Where is that empathy now? If it was Donald Trump holding off on taking action, what would Biden’s supporters be saying? If we were still in the middle of the election campaign season, are we going to pretend as though the Democratic candidates wouldn’t be using Trump’s refusal to act as something to campaign on?
Clearly, some of Biden’s advisors feel the President has the power and the obligation to act. In failing to do so, is he not allowing pharmaceutical companies or even Bill Gates to play God, allowing human beings to become sacrificial lambs all in the name of their profit margins? Is Biden not playing God himself? It’s also worth noting that if a Western country was facing the same struggles as India currently is, there probably wouldn’t be nearly as much controversy about this.
The fact that there is even a question about waving patents on vaccines is testament alone to how much power and influence American corporations have over not only our own lives, but lives around the world as well. We have allowed human lives to become a commodity, and widespread unnecessary suffering is the end result. I’m genuinely glad that the pressure for Biden to waive patents is increasing, and one can only hope that it is intensifying enough so that he has no choice but to do it. That said, I’m certainly not holding my breath.
