After watching the continued devastation unfold in Palestine and the Gaza strip specifically as Israel levels buildings, kills dozens of children, and destroys families, I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling not only despair, but helplessness too. Of course, the U.S. response to the recent escalations in conflict between Israel and Palestine as a result of Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions has only intensified those feelings as well, knowing our tax dollars are funding this disproportionate fight that innocent Palestinians have suffered under. That being said, the response of some Democratic lawmakers has been encouraging, and seems to indicate a shift in the stance of the party.

The most outspoken voice for the Palestinian people has undeniably been Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who happens to be of Palestinian descent. After giving an impassioned speech on the floor of the House of Representatives expressing her dismay that statements coming from the Biden administration and the State Department weren’t even acknowledging the loss of Palestinian life, Tlaib took it a necessary step further.

It cannot be understated how important it is to have a woman of Palestinian descent in a position of power here in the United States, speaking on behalf of her people, her family, and their freedom. Considering the role that the U.S. plays in funding this destruction of Gaza and so much loss of…
