Rally Behind Ilhan, Not Nancy.
There’s no more time for games. It’s time for the left to rise, and fight.
Let’s imagine our descendants sixty, seventy, even one hundred years in to the future.
Imagine historians at that time combing over video footage, internet data, social media feeds, and cable news conversations. Consider the times we live in now in the present, and how they will see us. I would imagine we’d be hard pressed to find a historian even today, who would deny that we are living in the midst of an incredibly pivotal moment not just within the United States, but the world at large. I don’t think it could have been made more clear than it was when our President tweeted that four leftist women of color serving in Congress should go back to the countries they came from, or when his crowd of supporters erupted into chants of “send her back!” when he called out one in particular.
Ilhan Omar is serving her constituency, and putting her body and life on the line to do it. As a leftist Somali Muslim immigrant, she is the antithesis of everything Donald Trump envisions for this country, and he is willing to weaponize his base against her in order to stress that point. Trump is using her in order to further his plutofascist agenda, even going so far as to say that she praises Al Qaeda, hates Jews, and hates America in order to instill fear and hatred in his base towards her and the leftist ideals she fights for.
When processing all of this, we must remember that the whole reason Trump chose to single Ilhan and her colleagues like AOC, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley out is due to Nancy Pelosi’s highly publicized disagreement with these women, which she chose to take to the New York Times. Nancy Pelosi handed Trump an opportunity to demonize these women, and he seized it enthusiastically. Make no mistake: the left needs to rally against the Presidents’ hateful attacks, but not behind the Democratic Party leadership.
The left needs to rally behind Ilhan, not Nancy.
Trump is making the future of the Democratic Party his target, in a move that signifies the last attempts of a dying Republican party to maintain power. This is not the time for centrist platitudes and reaching across the aisle. This is a moment in history where we can truly say you’re either with us, or you aren’t.
If Nancy Pelosi cares about the future of the Democratic Party as much as she would have you believe, then she needs to push the more conservative wing of her party to rally behind Ilhan and her fellow Justice Democrats. Now is not the time to rally behind a leadership who has shown time and time again they are all too willing to cave to Donald Trump’s political racist, bigoted, elitist goals and ambitions. It’s time to rally behind the people he so clearly fears.
I don’t think it is a stretch by any means to say that if something happens to Omar or her colleagues, the President and all those who refused to condemn him will have blood on their hands. This is not the time to attempt to reign these women in. This is the time to allow them to shine, and show the American people you are proud to have them and their visions on your side. Step aside, and let them make their case.
The future of this country is at stake, and it’s time to meet fire with fire. We finally have an opportunity to develop a moral backbone for this nation, and that doesn’t lie within Nancy Pelosi and the corporate elites. It lies within the true left who has met Trump’s hatred and incitement of violence with grace, integrity, and a fierce refusal to back down. Omar, AOC, Tlaib, and Pressley are the unifying figures of the Democratic Party, and it’s time for the party leadership to accept this and act as such.
