MSNBC’s Parent Company is Funding the GOP.
Once again, as long as politicians benefit a company’s bottom line, that’s all that matters.
When deciding who to vote for, a candidate’s position on healthcare and combatting the climate crisis are among the top issues that I care about. But one issue that might motivate me even more than a candidate’s stance on single payer healthcare and bold climate action would have to be money in politics, and for good reason. Time and time again, when we need to consider what might motivate a lawmakers rhetoric, action or lack thereof, or their votes on certain issues, all we have to do is follow the money. The pervasive influence of money in politics is a cancer that continuously prevents the will of the people from being enacted, and it’s as infuriating as it is interesting to see how deep the problem really is.
Let’s take Comcast for example.
According to Opensecrets.org, Comcast ranks 36 out of 21, 691 in terms of contributions through affiliates, “donating” $15,369,401 during the 2020 election cycle alone. In lobbyist spending, they ranked 15 out of 5,561 in 2020, spending $14,430,000.
