Kyrsten Sinema Killed a Federal Protection of Abortion Rights, Then Fundraised to Protect it.
Our lawmakers are absolutely shameless.
*TRIGGER WARNING: discussions of sexual assault and rape*
In the state of Ohio, a ten year old little girl was raped.
Following the overturning of Roe vs Wade, an anti-abortion law banning abortion past six weeks went into affect. Six weeks and three days after this little girl was raped, she was sitting in a doctors office as he called a colleague in Indiana who might be able to help. The little girl travelled to Indiana where, in a matter of weeks, that wouldn’t be an option for her either.
Indiana’s about to restrict their abortion access as well.
This is just the immediate affect of the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. This is what happens when our rights to bodily autonomy are stripped away from us, and a uterus becomes the property of the state.
But of course, it’s not just affecting victims and survivors of rape and incest. Across the country there are women fresh out of college and just beginning their career, panicking because they just found out they’re pregnant and vastly unprepared to have a child. In states like Texas or Louisiana there are men anxiously trying to comfort their girlfriend, realizing they’re feeling just as helpless and unprepared to be a parent as she is. There are mothers and fathers terrified because they know there is absolutely no way they can afford to have another child, but the last abortion clinic within the state was forced to shut its doors.
This is America.
This is what it looks like to move backwards, slipping into a christofascist nightmare of a country.
This is hell.
Of course, our Democratic lawmakers, the theoretical opposition, don’t appear to feel that way. I’ve still found myself thinking on a number of occasions about how in the wake of this decision that the right wing spent decades preparing for, Nancy Pelosi decided to read a poem and send a fundraising email.
She’s not the only one, though.
