If the 2000 Election Wasn’t Stolen in Florida.
The lasting, spiraling implications of that election theft are surreal, and still being felt today not just in the United States, but around the world.
I was far too little to have a recollection of the 2000 election. I don’t remember the news stories or the headlines or anything about it at all for that matter. I just remember at some point my Dad explaining George Bush was President. But as I get older and learn and reflect, it’s safe to say that my generation and those that come after me are still feeling the effects of what happened, and will continue to perhaps for the rest of our lives.
Of course, I had no idea the election was quite literally stolen. I had no idea that in the state of Florida, right wing operatives successfully managed to get the counting of votes stopped, and the Supreme Court upheld this decision. I had no idea that when all was said and done, Al Gore won the state and in doing so, won the election.
Every once in a while, I catch myself wondering what things would have been like if this had not happened.
For just a moment, shall we, let’s ask questions about what has unfolded either as a direct result or tangentially as a result of this election theft.
