Former Georgia Senator David Perdue is now running for Governor.

Unfortunately, I think he has a pretty good shot.

It’s been nearly a year since the fate of the Senate majority was left with the state of Georgia, with Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in what became one of the most closely watched campaigns in the country against Democrats Jon Ossoff, and Raphael Warnock. After Perdue and Loeffler lost their races to their democratic challengers, it should unfortunately come as no surprise that at least one of them would come to the decision that they were not done with politics. Just recently, David Perdue announced his bid to challenge Republican Governor Brian Kemp in a primary, after which the winner will likely be facing Democrat Stacey Abrams in 2022.

Unfortunately — for a multitude of reasons — I think he has a pretty good shot.

For one, there’s the issue of the state’s open assault on voting rights following the 2020 election. An issue that’s plaguing not just Georgia, but a multitude of swing states as the Democratic party, of course, sits idly by. Republicans have come to understand that in order to maintain their hold on power a suppression of the vote is only becoming more and more necessary with each passing election, and it seems likely that they are going to do everything they possibly can to avoid a repeat of 2020.

That being said, while Perdue might have an excellent shot at winning the general, one might argue he has an even better shot at ousting Brian Kemp in the general.

The GOP is now Donald Trump’s party, and David Perdue not only knows it, but he appears to be exploiting that reality for his own political gain. I mean, if he didn’t like how his own Senatorial race turned out, wouldn’t it be common sense for self serving, narcissistic politicians like himself to exploit the hostilities, anger, hatred, and resentment over the 2020 results for his own attempts to regain power? Perdue is all too aware of Trump’s feelings towards Kemp, and know that he will have the former President in his corner if for no other reason than Trump’s own personal desire to see Kemp pay for what he perceives as disloyalty. With Trump in his corner to rally the base, Perdue knows he’s got a shot.

It’s amazing, isn’t it, what politics here in the United States has devolved into? The supposed most powerful, greatest country on earth, where at a moment when people are working starvation wages in the middle of a pandemic struggling to survive, politicians decide to exploit the ego of another in order to regain power and feed into their own egos.

America, baby.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this race plays out, and I’ll be the first to admit I am far from an expert on the intricacies of Georgia politics, but as it stands today my money is absolutely on Perdue.
