Either Way, Election 2020 is Going to be a Mess.
Why the next election is going to be problematic, regardless of who wins.

We are well over a year away, and unfortunately my internal alarm bells regarding the 2020 election are already going off.
As many of us already know, Donald Trump was incredibly vocal in his proven false belief that the reason he lost the popular vote in 2016 was due to the millions “illegal votes” cast against him in states like California. While I am by no means trying to instill a false sense of security, polling does indicate that there is a fair chance Donald Trump could potentially lose the 2020 election. Of course, it is early and things are definitely liable to change. All of us need to be prepared to get out and vote. That being said, Trump is already laying the groundwork to claim that the election will be rigged against him.
The New York Times reported on his recent remarks at a Teen Student Action summit, publishing a piece stating that:
“The president also used his time at the conference to paint a dark picture of immigrants and the election system, falsely claiming that undocumented immigrants can vote, and then accusing the election system in states like California of being rigged. This has long been an inaccurate claim made by Mr. Trump, who said he lost the popular vote because of voter fraud in that state.
‘They vote many times, not just twice, not just three times,’ Mr. Trump said. ‘They vote — it’s like a circle. They come back; they put a new hat on. They come back; they put a new shirt. And in many cases, they don’t even do that. You know what’s going on. It’s a rigged deal.’”
Make no mistake, Trump is actively working to undermine the confidence of his voters in the election process. Is it really hard to believe that this is in an effort to make it easier for them to digest the idea that if he loses, the election was simply stolen from him? There’s no denying Trump’s fascistic tendencies in a number of areas, but this is potentially one of the most problematic and brushed over instances.
I don’t think Trump will be able to stay in power if he loses, but he’s clearly indicating that he will do everything he can to create chaos when he’s forced to leave.
Leftists have to be prepared for Trump to claim that he did not actually lose. We have to be prepared for him to challenge the election results, and galvanize his base to intimidate those who stand in his way. Given the rhetoric of his campaign this far out, we must understand that this is just the beginning. There is no telling just how brazen he will become in coming months.
Regardless of who wins, 2020 is shaping up to be an utter mess. Potential democratic nominees would be foolish not to acknowledge the threat that he poses to the democratic process. This is not politics as usual, and democrats who don’t understand this are arguably just as dangerous as Trump himself.
