DeSantis’ “Attacks” on Trump Are Nowhere Near Enough to Beat Him.
The Florida governor continues to prove he doesn’t have what it takes.
For months now, I and many others on the left have been considering what a potential 2024 GOP primary would look like, and have come to the conclusion — supported by polling — that Ron DeSantis is probably going to struggle. Now of course, there’s no denying he is in the best position of any current or potential challengers to take the nomination from former President Donald Trump, but that certainly does not mean that’s going to happen or is even likely to happen. Unfortunately for the Florida governor, it feels as though every time he speaks and he gets closer and closer to being forced to make a decision on whether or not to run, it becomes more and more clear that he’s just not up for the challenge.
Stephen Neukam with The Hill writes:
“…Trump has gone on the offensive against the Florida governor, crowning him with the nickname “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
“I don’t know how to spell the sanctimonious one,” DeSantis said in the interview with Morgan, which was detailed in the New York Post. “I don’t really know what it means, but I kinda like it, it’s long, it’s got a lot of vowels. We’ll go with that, that’s fine.”
He added: “I mean, you can call me whatever you want, just as long as you also call me a winner, because that’s what we’ve been able to do in Florida, is put a lot of points on the board and really take this state to the next level.”…”
Trump went on to call the name calling “background noise”.
Maybe so, but responses like this one are far from an effective response when laying out your case to the Republican base.
They don’t care for milquetoast responses like this, and in their eyes it presents as weak. Ron DeSantis has been pushed into a lose-lose situation, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. He is too savvy of a politician to attack Trump full force, but he also knows that he’s coming across as someone who can be bullied if he doesn’t say anything at all. Trump knows all of this as well, and we can bet that he’s enjoying every second of it.
And then, of course, there’s the added layer of the legal troubles that Donald Trump currently finds himself in, and how lawmakers like DeSantis are going to be expected to respond. The Trump situation for DeSantis is entirely made up of fine lines to walk, and his entire career hinges upon how he handles this moment. This situation he alone is responsible for putting himself in, and I absolutely love it.
